Theo Fennell is one of Britain’s most celebrated and instantly recognisable fine jewellers, famed for handcrafted pieces that fuse traditional goldsmithing with wit, theatricality and storytelling. Born in Egypt in 1951 to a military family, Alister Theodore Fennell was educated at Eton before studying at the Byam Shaw School of Art and serving an apprenticeship at the historic Hatton Garden silversmiths Edward Barnard. In 1982 he opened his own shop and workshop on Chelsea’s Fulham Road, where the business remained for four decades before relocating to its current gallery at 2 Garrison Square, Chelsea Barracks.
Nicknamed the “King of Bling”, Fennell built his reputation on gem-set crosses, oversized diamond keys, skull rings, opening bombé rings with hidden miniature scenes, and playful solid silver objects — most famously his Marmite jar lids. Every piece is made by hand in the workshop above the London gallery, and roughly half the business is bespoke commission work. His client list has included Sir Elton John, Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell and Elizabeth Hurley, and his work was the subject of the “Show Off!” exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2007.
A passionate champion of British craftsmanship, Fennell founded the Gilded Youth initiative to support young designers and makers, and is a member of the Goldsmiths’ Company. He regained control of his eponymous company in 2021 and continues to design and oversee every piece, keeping traditional skills such as enamelling, engraving and miniature painting alive in London.
