Chisholm Hunter is one of the UK’s largest family-owned jewellers and a Scottish retail institution. Founded in 1857 on Chisholm Street in Victorian Glasgow, the original shop was known as the “Store of 10,000 Wonders” — an eclectic trove of fine jewellery and gems from around the world. After surviving the Depression and two world wars, the name was nearly lost altogether until 1993, when gemmologist Harry Brown bought and revived the business, refocusing it as a specialist diamond merchant. Still owned and run by two generations of the Brown family, it has grown into a national force: 27 boutiques across Scotland and England, more than 300 staff, and a support centre in Glasgow.
Diamonds remain the heart of the business — the firm accepts only around 0.1% of the stones it assesses, with Brown personally overseeing selection — alongside an enviable roster of Swiss watch partnerships including Omega, Tudor, TAG Heuer, Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC, Panerai, Longines and Hamilton, plus a growing pre-owned watch offering and in-house workshops for repairs and bespoke design.
The crown jewel of the estate is the £8 million Edinburgh flagship opened for the firm’s 160th anniversary: a multi-storey boutique on the corner of Princes Street and Frederick Street, facing Edinburgh Castle, complete with a dedicated Swiss timepiece room and a champagne bar designed by Clive Christian. A three-time Retail Jeweller of the Year, Chisholm Hunter also supports a long list of charities, from Action for Children to Spinal Injuries Scotland — “A Cut Above” in more ways than one.
